How it Works

Quarterly Commitments

The Quarterly Commitments system was inspired by looking deeply at my students’ progress and options for optimization in my teaching. This system optimizes a comprehensive range of contexts, supports short- mendium- and long-term goals, and significantly helps maintain the type of consistency that promotes progress.

I love using the word “Commitment” here because there is a mutual commitment we both make each quarter to your music and expression goals.

My favorite way of thinking about the word “discipline” is in how it shares its origin with the word “disciple.” Someone becomes a disciple when they fall in love with something and then devote themselves to it because they long to spend time with it. My approach to practicing music is rooted in your love of making music, your core desire to express. Done right, practice feels exciting, enlivening, and the determination to overcome an obstacle in the way of your fullest expression.

Quarters:

Spring: Feb 15 to May 14

Summer: May 15 to Aug 14

Fall: Aug 15 to Nov 14

Winter: Nov 15 to Feb 14

Included in the Quarterly Commitment:

  • 12 sessions: All sessions must be used within the quarter.

  • Opportunities for make-up sessions: Two Saturdays per quarter plus schedule openings.

  • A Showcase: Every quarter will end with a Saturday Showcase where any student can perform what they've been working on! It is totally optional to participate.

  • Notes: We keep a shared Google Doc where we track goals, note new concepts, and track assignments and practice time.

Price

Students are on an auto-pay plan for $600 each month for the quarter.

I cap my studio at a maximum of 13 students

Because I adapt my teaching style to each student, the quality of my teaching starts to deteriorate after 13 different people. For reference, before starting the Quarterly Commitments system I worked with an average of 27 different people at a time.
